Multi-Pitch training and assessment cover the skills required to lead climbers on a ‘limited remit’ of multi-pitch climbs. Multi-Pitch training covers personal climbing, stance management, rope systems, client rescue and evacuation, etiquette, environmental responsibilities and more. Candidates will learn how to become an effective multi-pitch leader, fostering the spirit of climbing whilst also improving their own climbing skills.

This award is unique to both the Republic and Northern Ireland. It can provide a great stepping stone to the Mountain Instructors Award. The syllabus includes series and parallel rope work, stance management, improvised rescue techniques, crag evacuation techniques.
Entry requirements:
Hold Single Pitch Award, lead 10 multi-pitch routes. Register with MTBI (Minimum age 20).
Training:
The 2-day training course, followed by a further 2 days of assessment.

Requirements for assessment:
Personal Multi-pitch climbing, 20 multi-pitch climbing leads, in at least two different areas. Half of these routes must be graded Severe or above. These 20 leads can include the 10 routes required prior to training, however please note the requirement for 20 leads before assessment is a minimum, candidates should aim to have experience in excess of this requirement.
Multi-pitch climbing supervision:
Candidates should spend two sessions assisting an RCL multi-pitch award holder (or person with a higher award) leading students on multi-pitch climbs.
First Aid:
Current REC 3, Advanced Wilderness First Aid or Mountain First Aid certificate.

These assessments are offered on behalf of the Mountain Training Board of Ireland. Assessment courses will be directed by Bren Whelan (MIC).
